This is a great groove off Jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton’s album Payton’s Place. I love playing grooves like these where the beat shifts away from the backbeat while keeping a steady 8th note pulse on the Ride Cymbal.
It’s a 2 bar pattern and it can be easy to get lost when you first play it as the snare is not where you may be used to hearing it.
Just take it slow and count the beat for a while until you settle into it. It’s always a great idea to hum the tune as well while you’re working it out, that way the groove will make a lot more sense.
I love the little buzz on the snare in bar 1, it really loosens the groove up. These boogaloo style grooves feel laid back, don’t hammer the snare and ride!
