The ability to play soft notes in-between accented snare beats is a crucial technique for any drummer to master. Here is one of the first lessons I show my students to develop this.
It’s important to keep the left hand very low whilst playing the ghost notes and snap the stick from a greater height when playing the accents.
Watch that you don’t play the hi hat and bass drum soft too, they must remain consistent. The ghost notes should be below the volume level of the hi hat. One you’ve got it use a metronome and repeat lots of times increasing the tempo as you gain control.
